A 10-day Journey of Poetry in Water

  • TR19 7NJ UK

A 10-day Journey of Poetry in Water, with Steve Karle in Cornwall, England

One of the main skills in our approach to aquatic bodywork is the ability to step into an empty space. A space in which we can fully listen to another. Listen to the movement and the stillness. With our presence and our touch. At times coming closer. At times stepping back. Continuously negotiating togetherness and space. To then allow stories to be told. Spontaneous journeys to unfold. Primal dances to take place.

We look at movement in water as a mind-body process. This journey is an invitation for you to immerse within. Witness journeys without. And learn the art of aquatic bodywork through your own experience and observation. Throughout 10 days you will have a chance to fully dive into your own flow and gradually experience the unfolding of movement along your inner processes, at your own pace. We will study the impulses behind the movements, letting these guide us into a wide spectrum of possibilities. Technical precision in regards to support and alignment will be emphasised with a focus on principles rather than presentation. Through regular feedback and discussions, we will gradually build maps of awareness, understanding movement from a physical, emotional and psychological perspective. These maps will become the guidelines to our practice- the foundation.

WHO IS IT FOR?
More than a workshop, this is a space to retreat and connect. To slow down and let go. To play or to heal. And everybody’s rhythm is welcome, be it wild or calm. These are fascinating territories to explore for movement practitioners -from yogis to dancers- as well as bodyworkers, holistic therapists or somatic psychotherapists. We also recommend the journey to those who have had one to one sessions before and would like to deepen their personal exploration now within a relational field. Yet it is also ideal for those who never had any experience in this kind of work before as it is such an organic and gradual journey of discovery.

PROFESSIONAL PATH
For those with a professional aim, this 10-day journey constitutes the first part of the British School of Aquatic Bodywork’s Foundation Course (Modules 1-4). You will gain a great amount of awareness and skill that will allow you to go on and practice this work with others. We teach this approach as foundation, not because it is necessarily a beginner’s course but because we believe in learning how to truly ‘listen’ to begin with, through discovery and by developing your own creativity. In this way it is a unique immersion for already practicing aquatic bodyworkers.

All hours of training will be registered on the Worldwide Aquatic Bodywork Association and certified by the British School of Aquatic Bodywork.

LOCATION & VENUE
The journey is residential and will be held at Boswedden House in Cape Cornwall- a beautiful Georgian house situated on the Land’s End Peninsula in an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”. The house is 10 minutes walk to the sea, with the South West Coast Path close by and mile upon mile of stunning scenery all around. The unspoilt Cornish countryside is wild & elemental and late spring is an excellent time to enjoy it.

poetry in water workshop

  • Poetry in Water

Each Sunday morning starting 10th January Steve will be teaching a 5 hour Poetry in Water workshop from 09:00 - 14:00 in our private dedicated watsu pool in central London.

Each Sunday will have a different theme and will build up on the skills learnt. It is open to absolute beginners to Aquatic Bodywork as well as advanced students, for those on a practitioner path as well as those just curious to learn unique listening skills and the art of touch and movement in warm water.

Sunday 10th
We will start by re-discovering the element of water in our own body through a meditation. Exercises to find our natural alignment in this fluid element, balance and movement from our core will be explored. We will then explore quality touch in partners, togetherness and spaciousness and explore ways to connect and engage with each other. Emphasis on sensations and silence, while having space for sharing and constructive feedback

Sunday 17th
We will deepen into contact exploration between partners. No need for movement yet as the keyword here is awareness and containment. We will explore ways to engage the body in movement and in stillness in key positions.

Sunday 24th
We will learn bodywork and massage techniques, focusing on spinal work and on releasing superficial tension which is essential in order to tap into more subtle and deeper movement dynamics. Safety of support and basic technical aspects will be studied.

Sunday 31st
We will be looking at all the different ways to utilise touch in a therapeutic environment. We will be "Dancing into Stillness" through a range of exercises based on Craniosacral Therapy applied in water, in order to tap into the more subtle rhythms of the body, as a gateway into free flow.

We will focus on 'Being Neutral' which is an essential quality in a therapist. With elements borrowed from theatre and acting exercises, we will be exploring different ways of being neutral and receptive, like water itself. And this completes our journey.

Each 5hr workshop is priced at £120
Fee includes:
- Tuition & Certification
- Full use of Spa facilities (watsu pool rental, hammam, sauna, swimming pool, relaxation area, showers, use of towels, robes, slippers, complimentary teas)

Each workshops is certified by the British School of Aquatic Bodywork and you will receive a diploma. For a small additional fee you will be registered on the Worldwide Aquatic Bodywork Association with the corresponding hours of credit which count towards Aquatic Bodywork Practitioner certification by the British School of Aquatic Bodywork.

We have limited the group to 6 people in order to keep a small and intimate learning environment that maximises the flow of each workshop. Preference will be given to those interested to join the entire course of 4 workshops.

watsu® level 1 in england

  • San Jose del Cabo San José del Cabo, BCS Mexico

Welcome to WATSU® - Relax deeply and discover an artful approach to movement, stillness and touch, in water.

Watsu® Basic (and level 1) is the first step into the world of Watsu - the first form of Aquatic Bodywork created in the 80's by an American Poet in San Francisco, Harold Dull. With roots in Zen Shiatsu, it consists of you simply floating in warm skin-temperature water while having someone gently supporting you, synchronising with your breath and following your body's subtle movement patterns into a dance of stillness and motion including elements of shiatsu, graceful yoga-like stretches, massage... until you totally let go and literally, flow. As well as being therapeutic for a wide range of needs, it is a fully immersive sensory experience like no other. If you are new to Aquatic Bodywork we recommend Watsu to be the starting point. If you would like to have a taster, join us for Basic Watsu, which is the first part of Watsu Level 1.

During this foundation course, you will learn the principles, techniques and a repertoire of movements, that will allow you to share this work with others. It is a unique way to increase your awareness of the body, reframe the concept of touch, and explore creativity and authenticity in movement. It is also an opportunity to access a space of healing and deepen your relationship with yourself and others as well have fun and play.

(exact dates and venue to be confirmed)

Maximum group of 14 students
Worldwide Aquatic Bodywork Association registration and certification included.
Pre-requisites: None. But we do recommend experiencing at least one session of Watsu beforehand. If this is not possible for you, don't worry- the course is structured in such a way that you alternate between giving and receiving sessions, which allows you to gradually discover the therapeutic benefits of Watsu.

Part 1: Basic Watsu (16hrs)
The initial focus will be our own body. Through movement and stillness we will re-discover our core in the water and emphasise on alignment and ease of movement. We will then explore our body in relation to another. Emphasis will be given on how to stay grounded and aware of the space while tuning-in and engaging with another through touch and the breath. We will then focus on how to safely support another in a floating position and various ways to connect on a subtle level, encouraging trust and surrender while being neutral. You'll then be guided into a basic progression of moves and encouraged to explore and improvise. You will also learn how to apply some of the principles learnt in the water, on land. This workshop has a meditative tone, being the foundation of movement in Watsu.
16 hours
open to all
****

Part 2: Transition Flow (34hrs)
We will build on the basic form learnt during the first 16 hours, taking the meditative quality into greater movement dynamics and flow, exploring the dance of Watsu. We will learn a whole set of techniques, exploring the potential of water and its three-dimensional space. We will find ways to adapt the techniques to various body types. Greater movement requires greater stillness so there will be a focus on body mechanics to support and move each person effortlessly through the water. We will look at the quality of 'listening' and 'following' the natural movement patterns of our partner. The sense of ‘being with’ rather than ‘doing to’ will be explored during exercises on land.
34 hour workshop

Emphasis will be given on how to stay grounded in yourself and the space while tuning-in and merging with another through touch and breath. We will then focus on how to safely support another in our arms and various ways to connect on a subtle level, encouraging trust and surrender while being neutral. You'll then be guided into a basic progression of moves and encouraged to explore and improvise. You will also learn how to apply some of the principles learnt in the water, on land.

WATSU® Level 1 in Scotland

  • Glasgow Scotland

Welcome to WATSU® - Relax deeply and discover an artful approach to movement, stillness and connection to others, in water.

Watsu® Level 1 (Basic Watsu + Transition Flow) is the first step into the world of Watsu - the first form of Aquatic Bodywork created in the 80's by an American Poet in San Francisco, Harold Dull. With roots in Zen Shiatsu, it consists of you simply floating in warm skin-temperature water while having someone gently supporting you, synchronising with your breath and following your body's subtle movement patterns into a dance of stillness and motion including yoga-like stretching, shiatsu points, massage... until you totally let go and literally, flow. Apart from being therapeutic for a wide range of needs, it is a fully immersive sensory experience like no other.

During this foundation course, you will learn the principles, techniques and a repertoire of movements, that will allow you to share this work with others. It is a unique way to increase your awareness of the body through touch and movement. It is an opportunity to access a space of healing and deepen your relationship with yourself and others as well have fun and play...

transition flow
we will build on the basic form learnt during the first 16 hours, taking the meditative quality into greater movement dynamics and flow, including stretching and zen shiatsu principles. We will connect the basic moves through long and graceful transitions as well as learn a whole set of movements. You will find ways to adapt these to various body types. Greater movement requires greater stillness so there will be a greater focus on body mechanics to support and move each person effortlessly through the water to allow a sense of flow to arise. The heart connection and the sense of ‘being with’ rather than ‘doing to’ will be explored through a few hours of land class.
